The electrical power equation is used to convert electrical power into electrical current (Watts or Amps).
P = I*V
Where:
- P stands for power. It is measured in Watts (W).
- I can be described as electrical current or amperage. It is measured in amps (A).
- V stands for voltage or electrical potential and is measured in Volts (V). Most electrical devices run on 110-120V. Powerful electric devices that require 220V are available.
This equation can be used to convert watts into amps if the voltage is known.

RUPAM BASAK
This calculator will allow you to convert watts into amps.
We used a few examples to show how amps can be converted from watts. You will find the watts-to amps table at 120V electrical potential.
Here’s some quick and useful information:
What wattage makes an amp?
At 120V, 120 watts equals 1 amp. This means that 1 amp = 120 Watts.
What is the power of 1 amp at 220 Volts?
You get 220W at 220V per 1 Amp.
Let’s take a look at these 3 examples.
Example 1: 500 Watts = How Many Amps?
Let’s suppose we have a 500W air conditioning unit that plugs into 120V voltage.
Here’s how to calculate how many amps are 500W.
I = P/V
We get the following results if we input P = 500 Watts & V = 120 Volts:
I = 500 Watts/120 V = 4.17 Amps
500 Watts is 4.17 Amps.
What would happen if the voltage was 220V?
Let’s see how many amps 500W is at 220V.
500 Watts/220 Volt = 2.27 Amps
At 220V, 500W draws 2.27 amps.
Example 2: How many Amps Are 1000 Watts?
We can do the same exercise again and get 1000 Watts for how many Amps.
I = 1000 Watts/120 V = 8.33 Amps
It is evident that a 1000W device draws twice the Amps of a 500W device.
This watts-to-amps calculation is applicable to 220V.
I = 1000 Watts/220 V = 4.55 Amps
1000W draws 8.33 amps from 120V and 4.55 amps from 220V.
Example 3: How many amps are 3000 Watts?
3000 Watt devices are compatible with 120V and 220V. It is not uncommon to use a higher 220 Voltage in cases of higher wattage. This is done to lower the amperage.
For example, 3000 Watt equals to:
- 25 Amps if you use 120 V.
- 13.64 Amps if you use 220V
An amp breaker would be required to supply 25 Amps. However, if such a device is plugged into 220 V, it will only generate 13.64 Amps. There is no need to use amp breakers.
Example: Amp breakers are needed for larger multi-zone mini-split units. You can verify2-zone?3-zone?4-zoneAnd5-zone Mini-split system to check how many amps they use.
